I-22 bridge named in honor of Dr. David J. Rowland

Dr. David Jack Rowland, former Walker College president and an active member of the Jasper community for more than 60 years, was honored recently by having a bridge on Interstate 22 named in his honor.

Sen. Greg Reed (R-Jasper) and Rep. Connie Rowe (R-Jasper) were responsible for having the Alabama Legislature dedicate and name the bridge on I-22 over Town Creek covering mile markers 63.3 to 63.55 in Jasper in honor of Rowland. Signs honoring Rowland have been placed on both sides of the structure on I-22.

Supporters came out to a dedication ceremony to honor the former longtime president and chancellor of Walker College. Remarks were made by William “Bud” Long - Chairman of Board of the Walker College Foundation, Sen. Greg Reed, and Jasper Mayor Sonny Posey. They were followed by thanks from Dr. Rowland who told the crowd he was very touched by the honor.

The effort to have the bridge named for Dr. Rowland began with a suggestion from Dr. Marcus O’Mary. Additional support came from Bud and Susan Long, Lawson and Linda Murphy, the Walker College Foundation, and the City of Jasper.
